Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974)
Director - Martin Scorsese
The film that proved that there was more to Martin Scorsese than just moody men and great soundtracks. When Ellen Burstyn’s husband dies she takes off with her teen son across America to try and improve their lives. Quoting directly from The Wizard of Oz (just check out the opening scenes), this is a road movie, so we meet various people along the journey (Harvey Keitel, Kris Kristofferson, Dianne Ladd and a über young Jodi Foster) who all have an effect on Ellen. It’s Burstyn’s film, she’s in practically every scene and quickly makes you believe that Alice is real. Well worth hunting down.
